Roll up! Betting’s begun. Point your nose at Centrebet. Click on ‘2006 Footbball World Cup’ in the lefthand column and select a category to bet on. ‘World Cup’ has tournament winners. ‘World Cup Group Matches’ has individual matches and ‘World Cup Group Match Specials’ has other categories.
My bets and their odds:
- 5 boodles — Germany to win the world cup — 9
- 5 boodles — England to win the world cup — 8.5
- 10 boodles — Sweden to beat Trinidad and Tobago — 1.27
- 10 boodles — Australia to beat Japan — 2.4
- 10 boodles — Michael Owen first goal scorer in game against Paraguay — 4.75
- 10 boodles — Argentina will get a red or yellow card before Ivory Coast in their game — 2.1
Google’s release of their online spreadsheet made me think that it would be handy to have an automatically embedded spreadsheet with the betting results. Unfortunately Google don’t do that. They only allow people with google accounts to view their spreadsheets. If you want to look at the results in Google spreadsheets and have a google account, email me and I’ll invite you in.
As for the embedded spreadsheet, iRows does it and the soon-to-be results are below. I’ve bet all my money so I’ve got 50 boodles invested. If you want to see everyone’s spreadsheets a search for mywc at iRows shows everyone’s betting details. Before you complain about my sloppy layout and use of functions, you should know that iRows needs a slapping — that little ho don’t like my sumif statements.
There used to be a table of results here. But it no longer exists. Life’s just a series of disappointments, isn’t it?

How many times can we bet? Are we able to re-bet our winnings from the first lot of matches (on the off chance there are any) on the second round of pool games? Can we bet our boodles in stages, betting some now and saving some to put on, say, Australia v Brazil in a few days?

This is freestyle betting – a term I just made up two seconds ago – which means that you can do what you like. Pretend I have just given you 50 actual boodles. Your aim is to make as much off the World Cup as you can by betting. When and on what you bet is up to you. You can bet as often as you like as long as you have the boodles to do so. You could put it all on Australia to win the Cup or, as Tom suggested, use the control group betting method and not bet on anything.
Once the elimination starts everyone will get 50 more boodles because I know some people will invest their boodles unwisely.

10 boodles Japan will not win against Australia: 1.57

The odds on Daniel’s last bet are currently 1.21. In other clarifications, my bets for Brazil/England wins are of course for the whole comp.

The results from the first three matches are in. Daniel takes the early lead, unfortunate to miss out with his first bet – there were 10 corners in Germany v Costa Rica – but gets two with 3 yellow and on reds in Poland v Ecuador and the England/England double.
Thanks for the odds on Dan’s bet, Andrew. I guessed yours were for the tournament win from their odds.

I was tempted by my “keep my boodles” plan, especially seeing that only Daniel is making a profit so far. But where’s the fun in that? It’s raining today so I’ve used all my boodles.
I should mention that I know nothing about the World Cup. I mean, it almost goes without saying around here but I just thought I’d say it to be sure.

Damn you Tim Cahill! One was enough! One was enough! I thought I was on the money when the scores were levelled at 84 minutes in. Gah! 3-1.
But yay Australia. First World Cup win, and subsequently their first World Cup goal as well. Well done Shannon and Andy. Sorry Jackson and Matt.

I didn’t notice Andrew that you too benefited from last night. Damn you people. Pah! I only watched the first half and then left on a watched kettle principle. I definitely watched the wrong half.
Is that the official boodle symbol? If it isn’t, can it be?
andy

Do you have a better symbol? Maybe a sack of gold?
Spreadsheet should be fixed now.

And a bunch of results put in. I see everyone’s been losing money while I was away. I originally started this competition to give me inspiration on possible bets that I could use to win lots of money. I thought you all would analyse the matches, the teams’ histories and their odds and come up with some sure-fire bets. Now I think you’re just guessing.
The exceptions are Shannon and Daniel. Daniel’s steadily bet small amounts on winners and Shannon got a big pay out with 10 boodles on Brazil v Croatia 1st half highest scoring half with odds of 3.5

I wanted to bet Viduka will not score but they don’t give odds on this one. He has only scored 6 goals in 36 international games as a striker why doens’t hiddink put someone else on.
