Uba Null!

How’s this for tech? Once I’m wearing an Uba Mask, Null Brooch becomes almost a win condition. : )

Under a Mask, my opponent only gets to “draw” one card per turn, and I’ll never have any cards in my hand, so the Brooch will always be able to counter whatever they try to cast. (Except creatures…) Soft-lock! That should hold the game for the long enough that I can draw my Mindslaver, and start recurring it. ;)

There are hardly any creature spells in Vintage, and obviously I’d sideboard it out against an aggro deck. But against a control field, it’ll own. :) For the Library of Alexandria tournament on Saturday, I’m going to try to build a deck around this combo. “Uba Null” has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? ;) I’m going to use Bazaar of Baghdad as my draw engine, because the Uba Mask negates their drawback completely. Crazy card advantage. :)

  1. I promise to implement the [card] stuff soon. For the moment I’ve just put the links in myself…

With you writing, Neil, I might have to implement smileys, too! Or maybe, just give your posts a smiley background…

That combo sounds great fun. Do you find that soft-locks piss people off less than things like that nasty prison deck of yours? I’d assume so.

  2. I’m not sure if soft-locks are much less frustrating… Truth be told, I’m planning to use this combo in the skeleton of my old Prison deck, so my opponent’s comfort levels are certainly not a consideration! :)

The primary advantage of Uba Mask is it kills every counterspell, because you can only play spells in your own turn. (The deck I’m using has 90% permanents, so whatever I draw I should be able to play immediately.) So the people this deck is targetting aren’t worthy of our sympathy anyway! ;)

I’ve been coming up with some new synergies… To deal with the beat-down problem, I’m going to use [card]Ensnaring Bridge[/card]. With no cards in hand EVER, nobody will ever be able to attack. And my win condition is going to be [card]The Rack[/card]. (As opposed (completely!) to the traditional Prison kill, [card]Black Vise[/card].) Ha, ha! No cards in hand, EVER? Take 3 per turn… :)

P.S. Thanks for linking those. I can’t remember what you told me to do, there was some kind of super-easy linking code… Perhaps post the formula here, so I can refer to it next time I forget, please?

  3. Oh Neil, the formula is written here, below the comment box! If you’re doing a long comment, it’s sometimes easier to write:

    ... [Ensnaring Bridge][1] used with [The Rack][2] ...

And then at the end, collect all your links like so:

    [1]: http://gatherer.wizards.com/gathererlookup.asp? name=ensnaring_bridge[2]: http://gatherer.wizards.com/gathererlookup.asp? name=the_rack

Anyhow, about the actual cards: I’m glad to see you’re taking the prison deck in… exactly the opposite direction. When you declare a spell played, is it immediately removed from your hand?
