Subtext

Joss Whedon talked to ABC Radio National while he was hanging out in Australia recently and had this to say:

Every now and then you read something that is in your work that you hadn’t seen — a trend, or a concept, or connection that’s absolutely valid that you absolutely did not intend, that you just wrote — and that’s the thing that makes it art.

I mean if it’s just a product that you stick out there that people eat up and then they go on their day, it ain’t art. If it’s bigger than you, it’s art.

This is what clever people are for — to point at when they say things better than you can.

  1. He certainly says it well – although we could play semantics and point out that he says nothing of other people’s interpretations, only his own.

    I’m joking, of course :)

You are right about subtext of course, but I still think Lawrence Miles was being retarded.

  2. I take back all the nice things I said about Joss. Obviously he has no clue about anything.

Ahh .. .. I give up. I forget why I objected to subtext in the first place.

  3. The retarded aspect to Lawrence Miles’ initial review was the bit where he accused the writer of deliberately being a bigoted bastard. If you want to read him being sensible I should lend you About Time, which is awesome. If you’re a big nerd or have those tendencies.

I’m glad we can put this subtext business behind us.
