Atypical
Thought on Grapefruit’s new name continues apace, for the primary reason that if I’m to have any overlap at all where both urls work, it had better start soon. And I am glad to be able to tell you that we have made progress. The first world in the new name is almost certainly “atypical”. It’s an attractive word partly because it’s rarely used but mostly because it comes with a built-in double entendre.
Now, on to word number two.
- “atypicalreview” — very nice, very relevant, maybe just a shade dull? But probably the frontrunner.
- “atypicalworld” — a bit more abstract, but unfortunately there have been a lot of websites that end in “world” and I’m reluctant to join their ranks.
- “atypicaltime” — more abstract, maybe a bit awkward though.
- “atypicalx” — x’s are cool. Ahem.
- “atypicalshoe” — or any other random short word. If there was something that fitted in and sounded quite funny, it wouldn’t strictly have to be relevant.
Hopefully we’ll have decided on something by the end of the week. If people want to suggest things they’re only too welcome. Watch out for ‘conflated word syndrome’. I only just realised today that this Radiohead website isn’t A Tease Web, it’s At Ease Web.

Thumbs up for the atypical idea. My first thought for a suffix was view — hints at review, but a little more open ended and also hinting at the blogging side of things. Unfortunately some already has the .com of that. So then I thesaurused view. The best I came up with were atypicalsight.com (note the quadruple entendre — literally endless potential for fun there), or atypicalnotion.com

atypicalparade?atypicalreflection?atypicalexposition?
these are not short words though… how short are we talking, tom?

Hopefully six letters or shorter. Definitely shorter than exposition! Another in Andrew’s direction would be atypicalvision, which I’m quite liking (especially as it echoes ‘tv’).
What’s the fourth interpretation, Andrew? Something about bad eyesight, and…

on the short, random word front,
atypicalfish ?atypcialwheel ?
or for the odd echoes et al,atypicalcall ?with a bit of a multiple entendre in there as well

Oh bum. I just assumed atypicalvision wouldn’t be taken. And by such an awesome site too. atypicalview is taken by a livejournal so it barely counts as worthy either. We could get either vision or view as .net or .org. They’re quite appealing and I’m tempted.
Harrumph. Er… atypicalthought? atypicalnow? atypicalthen?

atypicalecho? Fish is actually tempting in many ways until I remember that I hate the ugly, smelly, slimy things. When an animal is ugly and it tastes bad it’s really failed on all counts.
By the way, my cookie for this site keeps putting me in as Tom BA BSc, I didn’t mean to keep doing it.

I worked out the fourth entendre! Site=sight! Ahem.

What do you think is the maximum amount of words a person can learn in a day? If you had, for example, around 1,000 words to learn in four days, how would you break that up? Somehow I think learning the spelling and meaning of 250/day in a foreign alphabet is a reach. But I could be wrong….

I would take two days off and then learn 500 a day, or 500 the first two days and the last two days revising.

I would learn them all in the first 3 days, then revise them on the last day. Or go swimming. Or both.

My point was that its actually impossble. I’d like to see either of you learn over 100 words in a foriegn language in a day. Spelling, meaning, conjugations… all that. And then still remember it three days later. What fun.

1000 would be difficult. It would help if it was a european language so there was some words that were already familiar.
I think I could learn 500 in four days.

Is this a new foreign language, or can you already know some of it? 500 vocab doesn’t seem that much actually.

Personally, I tend to separate it into “a typical something”. And I don’t like updating my bookmarks.

Thanks for those, Hayko. I quite like atypicalframe and atypicalspot. Atypicaldream is cute but just smacks of some livejournal somewhere.
The idea is that it can go both ways. The other one is bound to occur to people at some point. Having written 100+ reviews for this site, I feel somewhat justified in making you change one line of your bookmarks file. Suck it up, Hayko :)
