Star Wars Geekery
The release of the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD approaches, and I decided that details of any changes must have surfaced on the net. And of course they have — I found a summarised list of changes courtesy of Terribly Mauled.
Episode IV: A New Hope
- New Jabba the Hutt
- Improved Han/Greedo scene — its a CGI Han and they both shoot at the same time now
- Aurabesh on the tractor beam generator that Obi Wan deactivates.
- Lightsaber colours tweaked.
Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
- Ian McDiarmid plays the Emperor in his hologram conversation with Vader. The dialogue has also been changed slightly.
- Temeura Morrison (Jango Fett) now voices Boba too.
- Luke’s scream during his suicide plunge down Bespin’s main shaft has been removed
Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
- Sebastian Shaw has been tweaked in the unmasking scene. He now has blue eyes to match Hayden Christensen, and he has no eyebrows — more fitting for a burns victim.
- Naboo appears in the victory celebration scene, complete with Gungans.
- The Jedi Temple can be seen on Coruscant in the same scene.
- Hayden Christensen now appears as spirit Anakin.
Personally, I’m delighted that the scream in ESB has gone — that was my major wish. Having a CGI Han for the Greedo scene seems unnecessary when they had a perfectly good scene just waiting for them to put back properly. At least they’ve realised it needed changing.
In any case, I’m looking forward to the 22nd of September. Shiny case.

Hasn’t it come out in a boxed DVD set yet?
Where’s my Wonderfalls?
I like the way George Lucas makes Episode 1 and then inserts references to Naboo into the other films.

I’d like to bag him but if it were me and I had the opportunity to continually improve and interweave things like that, I would.
And these comments are the one place on grapefruit where that underscore to html business doesn’t work. Yet.

George Lucas can make a mangled job of his new films all he wants, but since he’s already made three good ones that I love, I wish he would just leave them alone.
Although he gets points for making any changes that revert back to the original editions. No scream = awesome. Although like you I would love to see the original Han/Greedo bit back.
Still – is this REALLY going to be a limited release? I’ve just never bought a LE early that hasn’t been on sale 12 months later. Maybe I’ve just never bought anything as popular as star wars.

It might just be marketing bullshit. Still, I’ll be getting mine straight away. Star Wars night at my place!!! After the Firefly night. These things are getting backed up.
There’s pics of the changes on that thread I linked to now.

I know I saw them. I just didn’t want to comment on how completely shit the CGI Han looks because hopefully I won’t notice when it isn’t a still.
I wanna have a Blakes 7 and an Office night. All these nights. We should watch television like normal people one day.

Normal people can only watch normal shows. They don’t put our shows on in ways that would allow us to watch them properly :)

This title is as good a place as any to point out:
The Good Guys Won.
Oh yes they did. Not you meanies with your killing innocents and your ugly faces and black “dark-side” jumpsuits. I don’t care what the sequel says.

I’m glad I turned evil. It makes me sound like a pawn of the Jedi.
Malak was a tall human who was horridly injured in a lightsaber duel. A swipe from a laser sword severed his lower jaw, and Malak was forced to wear a metallic jaw guard that hid his disfigurement from view. The guard also included a vocoder, through which Malak spoke with an eerie metallic tone.

Why get rid of the Bespin scream? Let’s face it, folks, Luke is a wuss, and why wouldn’t you scream when falling into an abyss like that, anyway? Makes sense to me. Far more importantly though – changing the Han/Greedo scene so they both shoot together. Han shoots first, dammit, because he’s an amoral badass. So there. Damn your revisioning, George, you could at least make the original versions available on dvd as well as the new ones, for historical preservation if nothing else…
well, that’s my geekery venting taken care of, now i can go back to being cool and wearing tough leather jackets, etc

Him jumping is a small victory I always thought? He almost looks triumphant just before he jumps – when only moments earlier he was deep in despair. He’s defying his daddy, and he seems to relish the idea of pissing him off.
He shouldn’t scream anyway because he did it on purpose. Personally I wouldn’t have any air in my lungs to scream but that’s just me.
Besides if you are a purist, you should have want the scream out just because it wasn’t in the original.
But yeah. Han being a bad ass all the way.

I agree that the fall is a victory for Luke. He’s tempted, he could go with his daddy and rule the galaxy, but he knows that the right thing to do is to reject him, even if it means plummetting to his death.
It all really depends on what he’s like on rollercoasters.
I don’t think anyone wanted Han any other way. Stupid George.

You guys leave my dear friend Online alone! It’s not his fault he has such a pathetic name.
Seriously, they could make spam like this more interesting. If they had like a story that continued, then it would be cool.

If spam was a thought-provoking story in installments, then I’d like it too.
So seriously, have any of you seen that guy billyz? I haven’t seen him for ages and I’m worried.
